Moorings - About Us
Before and After

In the early 70s, Sally and I happened to visit New Harbor, Maine, one of the least known and best kept secrets in the midcoast area. New Harbor, along with Monhegan island (10 miles off our coast) are the most historic interrelated areas in all of Maine. My history page details the breadth and depth of the historical significance of this area.

From the beginning we were so amazed at the beauty, potential and opportunity to save, improve and retain the character of this once- in- a -lifetime place. We bought our first derelict house, a 19th century cottage mansard, and completely rehabilitated it into what has been described as one of the most seamless blending of 19th and 20th century architecture. The completion of this house launched us into an agonizing process of acquisition and rehabilitation which continued for approximately 30 years. Our first house sat on little more than an acre of land and we now have completed the transformation of houses and gardens over a total of 20 acres. We have created a destination that is so unique not only to this area but can serve as a model of rehabiliting old houses without destroying their character.

Guests who have stayed with us have been universally overwhelmed by the achievement (guest testimonials). There are many who have suggested that if we ever became interested in selling these apartments as condominiums they would love to purchase them especially with the attendant amenities. Due to our advancing age and the cycle of time we have been working on this project, we are nearly ready for selling. The Moorings has shielded the area from even the appearance of commercialism. The true success of this development is the transformation of claustrophobic 19th century living into 21st century comfort while keeping the 19th century charm.
